Dr Trevor Beard

The late Dr Trevor C Beard OBE was for many years in general practice. In his later career with the Australian Department of Health in Canberra he developed a special interest in salt as a public health issue and was one of two co-authors of the salt guideline in the Australian Dietary Guidelines as well as a foundation member of the Australian Division of World Action on Salt and Health (AWASH). In active retirement he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Menzies Centre for Population Health Research at the University of Tasmania. He was also an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Nutrition Foundation. His book Salt Matters: the Killer Condiment is published by Hachette Australia.

In a moving tribute sent to members in 2010, Elizabeth Dunford, Research Officer for AWASH said of him:

"As many of you would be aware, Trevor played a pivotal role in salt reduction in Australia including as one of the founding members of AWASH. Trevor made it his personal mission to try and diminish the burden of hypertension by reducing salt intakes. His book - Salt Matters - helped to rid many patients of Meniere's disease by getting them to follow the Salt Skip diet and he was elected as Senior Australian of the Year 2006 for Tasmania as a result of this. He will be greatly missed by all of us but the many contributions he has made to public health will continue to reap benefits."
